House Bill 171 will reduce the amount of heroin needed for a person to be classified a major drug offender from 250 grams to 100 grams.

The bill addresses a growing issue in the Buckeye state; a new University of Cincinnati study said one in five Ohioans know someone who is struggling with heroin.

The bill, which passed the Ohio Senate Wednesday, equalizes cocaine and heroin possession to trigger a maximum 11-year prison sentence…

 

 

In 2010, the Center for Disease Control reported 3,306 heroin overdose deaths nationwide. That number more than tripled to 10,574 in 2014.
