We’ve had no shortage of catastrophic weather events here in the U.S. But what you may not know is that major weather events take a toll on our mental health. According to a recent study, disasters such as a hurricanes, wildfires, and flooding, can cause psychological scars–including depression–for survivors. Often those effects last years, sometimes decades. When looking at the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, for example, 49% reported mood disorders.
Impacts of severe weather can include:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
- Difficulty sleeping
- Drug abuse
- Alcohol Abuse
- Social Avoidance
- Irritability
With recent hurricane events, celebrities such as Lady Gaga are bringing light to the need for not only physical care, but mental care as well. >When asked about her million dollar donation to the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Maria, and Irma, Lady Gaga said: “The response to these disasters must encompass the survivors’ mental and emotional needs, as well as their physical well-being.” An important and often overlooked aspect of recovery.
