Over the past few years, there has been a substantial increase in childhood and teen depression. According to a recent study: One in five children has a mental health issue. Between 2011 and 2015, there was a 50% increase in clinical level depression, and a 43% increase in ADHD. Additionally, the rise in the suicide rate is steep: a 200% increase in children 10-14.
“According to TIME.com, ‘Despite the rise in teen depression, the study, which analyzed data from the National Surveys on Drug Use and Health, reported that there wasn’t a corresponding increase in mental health treatment for adolescents and young adults. Researchers said this is an indication that there is a growing number of young people who are under-treated or not treated at all for their symptoms.'” (Click here for the full text.)
The study suggests a correlation between the mental health of our youth and the use of electronics by children, teens and their parents. Bullying in the digital age is also cause for concern: a child who is bullied in today’s world experiences the abuse not only at school, but online day or night. Children need help learning to navigate this new approach to connectivity and peer interaction.
